According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “618 pedalcyclists were killed in 2010 and an additional 52,000 were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes.” Cyclist deaths accounted for 2% of motor vehicle traffic fatalities, and made up 2 percent of all the people injured in traffic crashes over the course of the year. Both sides share the blame; motorists need to share the road, and cyclists need to obey the same traffic laws that apply to motorists.
